An electromechanical switch that controls electrical power to the compressor and condenser fan motor in air conditioning systems; repeated on-off cycling from summer heat causes contact pitting and eventual failure.
The contactor is an electromechanical relay that acts as the on-off switch for your air conditioning system's compressor and condenser fan motor. When the thermostat calls for cooling, it sends a signal that energizes the contactor's electromagnet, which closes metal contacts and allows full power to flow to the compressor. When cooling is no longer needed, the thermostat signal stops and spring-loaded contacts open, shutting down the compressor.
In Phoenix's desert climate, contactors wear out faster than in milder regions because the intense summer heat forces air conditioners to run nearly continuously. Each time the contactor switches on and off, electrical arcing across the contacts creates microscopic pitting and burns the metal surfaces. After thousands of cycles across a hot season, the contact surfaces become rough and corroded, reducing electrical conductivity. This causes the contactor to fail to close fully or stick closed, preventing the compressor from starting or trapping it in a running state.
A failing contactor typically shows signs like a humming compressor that won't turn on, clicking sounds from the outdoor unit, or a system that short-cycles repeatedly. Replacement is straightforward and usually costs less than repairing compressor damage that results from prolonged contactor failure. Local AC repair and installation providers routinely replace contactors as preventive maintenance during seasonal inspections.
