What is a heat exchanger?
A heat exchanger is a furnace component that transfers warmth from hot combustion gases into circulating air, keeping the gases separated so they exit safely through the flue.
The heat exchanger sits at the core of gas furnace operation. Hot combustion gases pass through a metal chamber or series of tubes, while a blower circulates household air around the outside of that chamber. The metal walls conduct heat from one side to the other without allowing the gases to mix with the air you breathe.
