What is an evaporator coil?

The indoor coil in an AC unit where cold refrigerant absorbs heat from air, cooling your home; located near the furnace or air handler.

An evaporator coil is the indoor heat exchanger where refrigerant circulates through copper tubing to pull warmth from the air inside your home. As warm indoor air passes over the cold coil, the refrigerant absorbs that heat and evaporates into a gas, which then travels to the outdoor condenser unit to release the heat outside. The cooled air gets pushed back into your home through the ductwork.

The evaporator coil sits inside your air handler or furnace, usually in the attic, basement, or crawlspace. Unlike the condenser outside, it operates under lower pressure and lower temperature, making it the business end of cooling for your Phoenix home.
